Why Mountains?

Lately, I've been wondering why the background for this blog is a picture of a whole bunch of mountains. I mean, technically speaking, I do know why. I was the one who put the blue mountain range as my background, but what possessed me to do it? It's not like I hate mountains or anything. In fact, I really like them. They're very pretty and fun to climb (and these particular mountains are blue which is my favorite color), but they also have absolutely nothing to do with the title of my blog or what I write about. Therefore, I have decided to MAKE them relevant by giving some interesting facts about them just to say I've written about them (and besides, they are really cool facts).

1. Mountains make up one fifth of the earth's landscape.

2. Mountains are home to about one tenth of the world's population.

3. Heights of mountains are usually given as heights above sea level.

4. The highest fourteen mountains in the world can all be found in the Himalayas.

5. The world's highest peak on land is Mount Everest in the Himalayas. It is 8,850.1728 meters (or 29, 036 feet) tall.

6. About 80% of our planet's fresh water originates in the mountains.

7. All mountain ecosystems have one major characteristic in common - rapid changes in altitude, climate, soil, and vegetation over very short distances.

8. Plants that may be found on mountains include conifers, oak, chestnut, maple, junipers, stonecrops, campions, mosses, ferns, and climbers.

9. In some mountainous areas, the rivers are permanently frozen (these are called glaciers).

There you have it. Not only are mountains seriously cool, but they are also now relevant to my blog. Kinda, I guess. Well, not really but whatever. I tried.
