When Your Piccolo is Full of Mysterious White Stuff

Today, my band teacher, Mr. Messina, gave me the piccolo for a solo in one of the songs we are playing for our annual spring concert. When I first saw the case, it was covered in this weird white stuff that I still haven't figured out exactly what it is (I know it's definitely not dust). Once I opened and started putting it together, a whole bunch of white stuff just fell out of the piccolo and onto my skirt. It's like okaaaaaaaaaaaay. Clearly, this thing has not be used in many many years, so when I got home this afternoon, I set to cleaning it. Boy, did it take a while. Whatever that mystery white stuff was, it was hard to get off both the piccolo and my skirt. Though I'm very curious about what that stuff was, I think it's probably better if I never find out in case it's like the crushed bones of the last piccolo player who played it or something...
